Wyman Homestead Historic Well-Sweep

The Francis Wyman Association had been raising money for some time primarily through donations to the Association to rebuild a well-sweep in the same place on the property and as accurately reflecting the original design as possible.

The well-sweep used a long pole fashioned from a tree trunk and a Y-shaped support pole also fashioned from a tree trunk to retrieve water from a well and swing it over to the house.

The original well was found on the east side of the house. Some archeological digging was required before the sweep was rebuilt to be sure that we were not destroying something that couldn’t be seen in the area of the well.

Through both the physical and monetary efforts of members of the Association, we were able to complete the rebuilding of the well-sweep in 2023. Thank you to all of those who helped make this a reality!
